The last issue reported on the Acadian Heritage Family Day held in Rayne on August 27, 2005. Most of us have had changes in our routine due to the hurricanes. Our association understands that many members may have different addresses and will not receive this newsletter. We hope that word gets around so if you know anyone in the above situation, help us by informing them and us so we may get our people back on track. Contact us at:

This will be a reenactment of the Acadians’ arrival in Louisiana on the Bayou Teche in St. Martinville. Representatives of the honored Hebert and Broussard families will arrive in boats (pirogues) at the boat ramp south of the Evangeline Oak. The boat occupants will land and join their families…many of whom will be dressed in costumes of the 1700 Acadians. Everyone is invited to dress in period costumes. The landing will be held at 10:00 A.M. In order to see the landing ceremony, plan to be in the St. Martinville area early enough to find a parking location. There is no designated parking. Events for the day include children’s theater, story telling, cultural activities, Cajun food demonstrations, genealogy, lecture, arts and crafts and numerous exhibits of Acadian traditions. Food and drinks will be available for purchase – no ice chest please. Music will be played by various bands including “The Miller Cajun Family Band” and “Moi-J’aime-Ca-Comme-Ca”. There will be a celebration of the Louisiana social eating club chapter of L’Ordre du Bon Temps which originated in 1606 in Acadian Canada. The club is the oldest in North America and is celebrating its 400 year anniversary. Be sure to visit the Acadian Memorial which has the mural of our ancestor’s landing. There is also the wall of names which is a listing of Acadians who arrived in this area during the 1700s. Outside there is an eternal flame and coat-of-arms of the family names as well as the international symbol -The Deportation Cross. The memorial is located in the same area as the Evangeline Oak where the landing will take place. Next door is the St. Martinville Cultural Heritage Center which contains an Acadian Museum and the African American Museum. Look for the Hebert banner and stop by to visit with other Heberts. Your cousins are looking forward to seeing you. |
