".....practically all of the state's Hebert families descend from Acadian refugees who arrived between the 1760's & 1780's" Robert C. West HEBERTS THROUGH THE YEARS: (The following excerpt is taken from An Atlas of Louisiana Surnames of Franch and Spanish Origin by Robert C. West.) "Represented by more than 6,000 households in the state today, Hebert is Louisiana's most frequent surname of French origin, barely outnumbering Landry. The name is also common in many parts of France and French - Canada, and in the United States occurs abundantly not only in La. but also in New England, long a recipient of French-Canadian immigrants.... In Louisiana Hebert families have remained largely in the southern part of the state near areas first settled by their forebears." ".....practically all of the state's Hebert families descended from Acadian refugees who arrived between the 1760's and 1780's. At the time of the Expulsion of 1755 Acadia (Acadie) contained a large number of Hebert families, probably all descendants of two brothers, Antoine and Etienne Hebert, who ca. 1640 had migrated from their native town of La-Haye-Descartes in Touraine Province, west-central France. Like their Acadian compatriots, the Heberts were widely dispersed by the British, some being exiled to England and then to France, others sent to the seaboard colonies from Massachusetts to Maryland; some escaped into Canada and others eventually reached Louisiana." ABBEVILLE, Louisiana, chosen by the newest HEBERT Association to be the site for its 1999 CMA-LA Reunion: "During the month of August 1999, Louisiana will witness the greatest influx of French-speaking people since 'Le Grand Derangement' (the big displacement) of the Acadians in the 18th century. The reason for this event is to celebrate the Congres Mondial Acadien-Louisiane 1999 (the Acadian World Congress-Louisiana 1999). The theme of this gathering will be AReunion en Louisiane 1999." (Guidry-LaParole) The HEBERT family will hold its reunion on the weekend of August 6-8, 1999, on the campus of Mt. Carmel-Vermilion Catholic Schools. Abbeville is a quaint French settlement located in the heart of Acadiana. Its people are known for their friendliness, joy of life, good food and great cooks. It can boast of the only Giant Egg Omelet in the U.A. (Maybe we can prevail on the omelet's Chevaliers to put on a mini-Egg Omelet Festival for our visitors in 1999.) EVENTS CALENDAR: FrancoFete 1999 FrancoFete is a yearlong, statwide event to commemorate the tricentennial of the establishment of the first permanent colony by the French in the Louisiana Territory. It will begin January l, 1999, and run through December 31, 1999. FrancoFete will showcase Louisiana's precious French patrimony: its history, its people, its culture. Congres Mondial Acadien-Louisiane is an important component of FrancoFete. (FrancoFete-La Parole) Les Hebert de Nouveau Brunswick - - - L'Association des Hebert d'Acadie: The Association of Heberts of Acadia will host its reunion in Cocagne, New Brunswick, on July 15, 1997 in the Area of Grand-Pre, Nova Scotia, just a couple of hours away from Cocagne, N.B., the Acadians will be celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Longfellow's AEvangeline."
