A Special Event (Un Evénément Spécial) By Beverly Desormeaux Hebert
Guests who travel to Abbeville, Louisiana, to attend the Hébert
family reunion on August, 6 & 8, 1999, can witness something that can
happen only in Abbeville. Nowhere else in the United States does anyone
cook a 5,000 egg omelette. This omelette is served to everyone in attendance.
All this takes place in the historic and picturesque setting of the downtown
area. Preceeding the lighting of the wood fire under the twelve foot skillet
that is only used for this once a year event, there is pomp and pageantry
as the Confrerie members parade the ingredients around the town square.
Come and experience the Hébert family reunion and leave with wonderful
memories of having experienced a rare event. (to be continued)

Do you know any? We would love to hear from you if you do. We know a few, but surely there are more. How about these:
HÉBERTS THROUGH THE YEARS
(Excerpted from An Atlas of Louisiana Surnames of French
& Spanish Origin) By Robert C. West
“By 1855 five Héberts of Iberville, including the governor, operated large sugar plantations on the west bank.... The fertile soils along the Teche and Vermilion bayous and the adjacent prairies in the Attakapas attracted a large number of Héberts, who with their Acadian compatriots began to enter this western frontier in the mid-1760s. Among fifteen or more Hébert families who settled the Attakapas during the late eighteenth century, perhaps two contributed the largest number of descendants. One line descended from Belony Hébert and Jeanne Savoi, who, during the Expulsion, escaped with their children into New Brunswick. Two of their sons eventually reached Louisiana, Joseph-Pepin (m. 1771 Madeleine Trahan) arriving before 1766, Jean-Charles (m. 1773 Madeleine Robichaux) possibly coming somewhat later. Both brothers settled along Bayou Vermilion, as did their immediate descendants, including the five sons and ten grandsons of Joseph-Pepin and three sons and nine grandsons of Jean-Charles. Most of these Héberts lived as small farmers and stockmen along the upper portion of the bayou in the vicinity of present Lafayette, but one of Joseph’s sons, Francois-Pepin (m.1802 Marianne Mouton) obtained land along the lower Vermilion near present Abbeville, becoming one of the pioneer settlers of Vermilion Parish, where many of his descendants still live.

President Paul Hébert, of the Association of Héberts of Acadia, reports that plans for the reunion to be held at the marina on July 5 & 6 are just about complete. The most pressing business at hand is the request for meal tickets. Only 1000 tickets will be printed; therefore those without tickets will miss out on the great meal being prepared. The evening meal will cost $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children. In addition, there will be a $5.00 registration fee for the reunion. There will be a canteen for lunch, provided by the Scouts and Cubs at minimum cost. Friday evening is party time. This reunion will be a social one. It is opened to all - Héberts and others. Expect lots of genealogy and a special book with a lot of history and photos dating back to the 1860’s. President Paul is expecting a great turnout and therefore urges all who are coming to the reunion to take care of business NOW: Mail your request for tickets to Roger Hebert, Reunion ‘97 Committee, RR#1, P. O. Box 14, Site 3, Grande-Digue, N. B., Canada E0A 2S0. Lest we be misunderstood, we would like all to know that our Association “The Héberts of the World” is named that way because of the World Congress of 1999 to be held in Acadiana, Louisiana. We want you to know that we are applying to become a chapter of the Acadia Hébert Association. That Association is an affiliate of the Federation of Associations of Families of Acadia (FAFA). By doing this our association will be represented at all meetings of FAFA in Canada and reports of those meetings will get back to us through AHA.
Thanks Janet Jehn for reminding me of a conversation I had with Stephen White several years ago concerning the parents of Antoine & Etienne. According to Mr. White, the parents of the two are unknown; therefore, I am in error listing Jacques as their father.

Congrès
Mondial Acadien holds it first Workshop
CMA-Louisiane 1999 held its first workshop on Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Lafayette City Administration Building. MEGA KUDOS goes out to Eddie, James, Mitch and Brent. It was one of the most imformative meetings on the Congrès ever. Brian and his group are definitely at work. Our family was well represented; and we came away from the meeting loaded with helpful ideas to make your reunion, fun filled, educational, and meanful. The reunion program for the Hébert Reunion is still being studied, worked on, and improved. Soon you will know what kind of a week-end to plan for in 1999; until then your views are important to the Board. So, if you have some ideas, get them to us. From the Hébert family........THANKS, BRENT, MITCH, EDDIE, BRIAN, AND JAMES.
The next meeting of the HÉBERT membership is set :
Where? City Court Bldg., State Street,
one block south of the courthouse, in Abbeville.
When? Sunday, May 18, 1997
What time? 2 p.m.
Please take the time now to call other Hébert descendants to accompany
you to this meeting. Pick them up in your car.
Because of the interest being shown in
the east segment of Acadiana and because of the many Hébert families
along the Mississippi from Plaque-mine, south to Lafourche and Terrebonne
Parishes, the board welcomes the chance to bring its next meeting to Thibodaux.
The board meeting will be held at the Holiday
Inn in Thibodaux, beginning at 1:00 P.M, on Sunday, April 13. We are asking
all of our Hébert cousins from the area to come to this meeting.
The Holiday Inn would comp us the meeting
room if we could guarantee that forty (40) people would eat lunch there.
They serve a buffet lunch. So, if you plan to make this an outing and will
eat lunch in Thibodaux and would like to help us defray the expense of
the meeting room by eating with us, please call (Russell Gaspard) at 318-893-2381
to RSVP by Wednesday, April 9th. The group coming from the Abbeville area
plans to be in Thibodaux by 11:45 to eat before the meeting.
The board is made up of the officers and
committee chairpersons. Each committee will make a report on what its plans
are as of this date. It will be informative. In addition this will give
the board a chance to hear new ideas.
To those of you in the area mentioned above
who are receiving this newsletter, we would ask that you please spread
the word for us. The cost of mailing prohibits us from sending the newsletter
to every Hébert family, so we must rely on your help to get the
word out. If you can, copy this newsletter and mail it to other Hébert
family members, friends, and neighbors. Or call them about the meeting.
